The Art of "The Dark Plague: Trials of Galwefeld Demo"

Introduction

I am the art director responsible for the visual direction of the game. Before the project starts, I took off-time to create the logo for the team as we did not have the theme of the game yet. Before the timeline even starts, I started doing market research of my own on the most popular game's visual and the mechanical detail surrounding assets creation. I made a sample pixel art animation to get a feel of Aesprite in-order to prevent the lack of knowledge to impede development time.

After a morning's discussion on what we would like the gameplay and theme would be, I took a few stabs in the dark without any set of direction as at this point, only the ideas and gameplay loop are outlined. After some experimentation on different concept art to discover its proposed final look, I presented it to the team to get their feedback--which I accidentally discovered that my actions, rather than resulting in our team  making a collaborative effort to scrutinize it and inject their own mixture into deciding the final look, instead helped lay the track in motion of deciding elements for the game as they accepted the result without question.

I later created most of the art assets present within the game through the use of a bounty system (where the lead developer list out all core elements of the game) and a wishlist system (where the developer list out elements that would help enhance the game but isn't necessary). I managed to finish enough of the core assets that I had enough time to create assets from the wishlist system. I even have time to create different house-type mid-development as play testers realized that they needed different houses to help them get a bearing on their location. Once we were near the end of development time for the game's demo, I spent extra time to create almost all of the assets for the Steam store page.
